About Spoiled Bird Toys
Spoiled Bird Toys is located outside Molalla, Oregon, about 50 miles Southeast of Portland Oregon. The company was started in 2000, when the owner, Sally, found out that there weren't any affordable, quality Manzanita play stands or large parrot toys.
Prototypes were tested on her own parrots, including Darwin, who you can see enjoying a stand at the top of each page. Stands were sold exclusively for several years at Northwest bird shows as the product was perfected for safety, durability, and most importantly, fun for birds!
Spoiled Bird Toy stands, and many of its hand-crafted toys are made from Manzanita. This is a very hard hard wood that grows wild in the cascade mountains of Oregon. It can develop cracks overtime, but retains its usefulness and beauty for years. It is also a safe wood, easy on bird feet, and safe to chew on.
Through careful design, we have created a tree stand where most of the bird's mess will land on the easy-to-clean base and not on the floor.
Tree Stand Construction
Our bird tree stands are made of Manzanita. This is a very hard wood that grows naturally in the mountains of Oregon.
We prepare the wood by removing excess bark and smoothing out rough spots. This makes the wood easier to maintain with a rough texture that gives the birds a good grip.
We attach branches with wood screws and counter-sink the screws to keep them away from birds.
Screws are covered with wood plugs to prevent birds from picking on that spot and to improve the durability and look of the stand.
For the base, we take premium grade plywood. Over that, we lay a sheet of acrylic, the same stuff used in shower walls. Other stands use a melamine (a water resistant white paint) coated chip board. Our acrylic covered plywood is much more durable and much easier to clean than melamine bases.
We edge the base with quarter-sawed fir logs. This is safe for birds to chew on, as opposed to the melamine used on other stands. The large logs also provide more edging material for a more durable stand that is less likely to tip.
We add toy hooks and stainless steel perch cups (one on smaller stands, two on trees).
Then we add a toy (two on large trees!) to make your bird tree even more fun!
